Festival of Trees - The rest of the story
3 Nephi 13:1 Verily, verily, I say that I would that ye should do alms unto the poor; but take heed that ye do not your alms before men to be seen of them; otherwise ye have no reward of your Father who is in heaven.
The folks that do the festival of trees truly are behind the scenes. I am sure there will be a reward for all they do. But for now, I am thankful for them.

Huntsman Senior Games October 2013
When we first went to the center to pick up our packets a feeling of dread filled my soul. I could tell these people were the "jocks" of my high school days that I didn't relate to. I was a "nerd" in high school and not particularly athletic. I didn't walk with that air of confidence that I attached to being a popular jock. I felt so out of place. Even old "jocks" still exude a confidence that I didn't feel. I was nervous to say the least.
Tuesday October 8, 2013 THE HILL CLIMB
We were signed up to do the 3 mile hill climb up Snow Canyon. I am a terrible hill climber but had signed up for all the bicycle events. We parked our car and the first thing I see is a guy from Oregon warming up. Warming up? Really? Oh my these people are serious. That feeling of dread that I had began to grow. I warmed up by getting on my bike and riding to the start line. They start you with a push off. I was so nervous, I couldn't clip in and they couldn't push me off. I did go up the hill and I was passed by a bunch of people, but once on my bike all I could think of was that I could do this - maybe not in record speed, but I could do it. I met Rich at the top and we rode down together. He received a medal, I got a ribbon. I felt like I was in little league soccer -- everyone wins. Not that everyone gets a ribbon, but if there are only 5 in your division - you get a ribbon. Feeling good!

Wednesday October 9, 2013 THE TIME TRIAL
I feel like I can do a flat course and we had driven this course the day before. It was short only 20K. My goal was to not be passed up by a bunch of people that started behind me. I at least clipped in and let them give me the assisted push off. I am improving right? It was nice when we started but the wind did start to kick up and by the time Rich started - he had a pretty nasty wind to contend with. Yep - 5th place and there were more than 5 this time.

Thursday October 10, 2013 THE CRITERIUM
I was going to skip this. Then Sally - first place winner usually said - "there are only three in our division, you might as well ride". I decided that it was only a 30 minute crit and I could at least get my legs a little exercise that day. I don't know how to explain a crit. It's a timed event. We did laps around the old St. George Airport runway for 30 minutes and whoever is ahead at the end of 30 minutes wins. We all started together. I am terrible at turning corners so you can imagine how fast I can go having to turn corners every few minutes. To make this race more exciting - it was raining. Warning to the riders before we started - don't get on the painted x's. They are on the corners, slippery and you could go down. Another reason for me to slow down. Rain and slippery road. This is fun right? Every time I go by where Rich is standing, I hear him cheer for me. Keep going I tell myself. I am now dead last. But now I'm thinking - you are going to be beat by a 75 year old woman. I tried for the entire time to keep up with her and finally on the last lap I got in front of her. That was my claim to fame and the fact that I actually rode this in the miserable rain.

Friday October 11, 2013 THE ROAD RACE
This ride was only 37 K for my age and division. Rich's was 62 K. This was part of the ride that Rich and I had done in February when we went down for a weekend ride. That was the day we climbed "the wall". It is steep. Because I had done it before, I kept saying - you can do this - you have done it before. This was a great experience for me. The picture below is the 75-79 age group winner. She only did it 10 minutes slower than me on a borrowed bike.( Someone had actually stolen her bike the night before this race) I am hoping to be like her when I grow up. Another inspiration to me was a lady from Sandy. She has had cancer and has had 5 vertebrae fused in her back. Her husband is fast, but she is determined. She has been coming for 10 years -- The first 8, she walked her bike up the wall. She defines success as being on the bike and for the last two years being able to actually ride up "the wall". Every time I got a bit discouraged, I thought about Cindy's determination. I was in awe.

Saturday October 12, 2013 TRIATHLON - Vicki only - Rich doesn't swim
My birthday and the day of the triathlon. I of course was nervous, but mostly I was just grateful to be doing the event. I said to myself - I have just done 4 cycling events. This event is just because I can do it and I really don't want those early morning swim sessions to go to waste. No pictures - I just couldn't post the picture Rich took of me running. I spent 5K trying to keep up with a 75 year old guy. It wasn't pretty, but I did not come in last despite a very long transition from swimming to bike. Rich wondered if I was taking a nap. Next time my goal is to not be in transition for 4 minutes!
The Lessons from the Huntsman games were more about individual triumphs. I saw people who had beat cancer, broken body parts, fused body parts. Some of the contestants even looked like they needed help walking. Some of the cycling folks had to have help getting on their bikes, but once they were on - could they ever ride. I was so impressed with how nice the competitors were. They looked out for each other and were genuinely happy no matter what place they took. At this age, you realize that you are in a special group. A group of people that have been blessed enough to be able to do whatever sport they are doing. They know they are blessed and they are grateful for it. I am grateful that the Huntsman family has sponsored this. I realize and am thankful that their money can be spent in helping thousands of us that are aging. I will go back. I am smart enough to know that my times aren't going to be better than the year before, but I did learn that you are just competing against your own abilities. You are doing your best, whether it is better than someone else - really doesn't matter. What matters is that you give it your all. It was a good lesson for me to learn.

LOTOJA 2013
Ride from Reno A few years ago while doing a radio spot for the Huntsman Cancer Fundraiser I met Jeff Warren who started the Huntsman 140. Jeff rides from Reno to raise money for cancer research. Because they ride through Fallon where my brothers country kitchen is, we became friends and fed the riders lunch at the farm their first day on the road. Rich rode that first year from Reno to Fallon. the second year he rode the entire first day 130 miles. This past year he rode the entire 667 miles from Reno to the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Every Saturday needed to be a long ride and he joined the Bountiful Mazda Cycling Club that Jeff Warren is part of so he could learn to do his part on the Ride from Reno. He joined the Huntsman Hometown Heroes and was able to get a guaranteed spot in the LOTOJA race. He trained all spring and summer for LOTOJA. I supported Rich on the Ride from Reno and you can read about it at www.ikickedcancersbutt.org.
LOTOJA 2013
Rich is a very determined person and has a tremendous amount of self discipline. Our biggest problem was we really didn't know what we were doing. HINT to LOTOJA: you need a newbies section that tells you what you should even sign up for. Because of not even knowing what to sign up for - Rich signed up for the rider category in his age division. He signed up with 6 other Valcom riders who are a bit younger than he was. Therefore when it was all said and done he only got to start with one other rider his age from the Valcom team and that start was almost 45 minutes after the other 5 riders.
Rich seldom gets visibly nervous about challenges. But this time was a bit different. Some work challenges decreased the amount of time he could ride during the week. Had he done enough? Had we figured out his nutrition in order to sustain him through the race? Had the training rides been hard enough and long enough? Was his taper week too little or too much? Did I understand what he needed when and would I be at the right place and the right time? So many questions with so few answers. I was nervous enough for both of us. I found myself being very edgy. ( Sorry about that Rich and Trevor) At some point I will journal exactly what Rich did because should he do this again I want to learn from our mistakes.
Most worrisome time. We were at the Afton feed zone and someone came in and said a rider was down. He was not getting up and he was in a blue kit. Rich is in a blue and white kit and I began to worry. He was a bit past when I thought he should be in and I am such a good worrier. The ambulance came in and then the bikes. When they unloaded the bikes and I realized they were not his, I could breathe again.
The Mountains: Rich did start behind the Valcom team, but they took a few more minutes at each feed zone, bathroom breaks for 5 can take up a bit more time and Rich can climb. He caught up with them at the top of the last pass and was able to ride the rest of the way in with the team. He loved that.
The drive: Trevor kept me company. Thanks to Trevor for being patient with me. I was so edgy that I could hardly stand myself and yet he was as cheerful as could be. We listened to Peter and the Starcatchers. Awesome audiobook. Thanks to Amy Johnson for the recommendation! I ate enough calories to replenish Rich's lost calories.
My frustration: There are 7 feedzones and I got to see him at 3. After fully supporting him on the ride from reno, I was feeling a bit useless.
Lesson learned: The guys and gals that do this race are so driven and capable, that they could do this with just neutral support and be fine. I would still be frustrated that I couldn't do more.
about some knee pain and his shoulders were sore. Other than that - he is not a complainer. ( I need to give him lessons, so he can get some sympathy)

Jimmer
We had an opportunity to spend and evening with the Fredette family. Valcom had donated to the Fredette Family foundation and as a thank-you we got to spend an evening bowling at Fat Cat's in Provo with the Fredette family. I am pretty sure the big kids were more excited than the little kids. They were giving away some signed basketballs to the first person that got two strikes in a row. Mike really tried for that. Then they put up colored pins and if you got a strike with the colored pin in front you received a signed basketball. Luke who loves to bowl had a colored pin in front and bowled it and didn't get a strike. The next time he got a colored pin in the right position, everyone stopped him to see who should bowl it. Mike had left, Josh didn't have bowling shoes on so Ashkii was elected to bowl it. Sure enough he got a strike and per Linton family protocol very loud cheering erupted. I am pretty sure that everyone else that received a ball did not show the proper enthusiasm. Our crew was pretty excited.

Update

| The culprit |
Saturday August 31, we went to Strawberry (our cabin). We had a homeowners meeting and I attended. Probably the wrong thing to do, since there are some mean spirited people that are critical of everything and everyone. I came unglued when there were some that complained they weren't getting the newsletter ( that I do) and in the past have complained that the newsletter doesn't contain pertinent information. If Adam and Leanna and Brooke and Ashkii and their families had not been there, I probably would have had an even worse day. But when you see those darling kids having a great time - then you realize what is important. Nevertheless we left the cabin that night in a bit of a hurry and I didn't have time to clean everything and we were lending it out the following weekend, which meant I had to go back up on Tuesday to clean it.
Sunday September 1, 2013 We came home to go to church. When we got up we heard a helicopter going around and around. It seemed close, but we didn't realize what they were doing. We got out the binoculars and could see that it was a police helicopter. I of course hopped on facebook to get the latest accurate information. Then we started getting texts that church had been cancelled. Now that seemed important. We really didn't know what to do with ourselves. Lesson learned: We like church. We didn't really know what to do with ourselves without being able to teach our cute primary class. Very odd day. Went out on the deck and something very mean bit me on my foot. Poor Rich, he doesn't know what to do with me when I am being an absolute zero pain tolerance person. He couldn't see any holes in my toe and he was being so patient with me as I complained. I tried soaking it in epson salts, benadryl cream, antiitch stuff, essential oils and there was nothing that would stop the pain ( ok not that bad - but bad enough that it throbbed) and itching. ( more to this story later)
| It was just hovering above 13800 and Fort Street. So Close we could see the officers with guns. |
Monday September 2, 2013
Decided to go for a bike ride with Adam and Rich. Rich is supposed to be tapering his workouts for LOTOJA. He doesn't know how to taper. I wasn't spinning fast enough and by the time I got to Ashkii's Rich had ditched us and we didn't get back together until then. At Ashkii's I was done. I took my shoe off and immediately was bitten on the same foot in almost the same location as the day before by a bee. We at least know what bit me, because Adam found the bee crunched on the sidewalk. All my years of doctoring Ashkii must have been worth it because he immediately had me ice it and it felt much better. NOTE: ice is much better for a bug bite than hot epson salts.

Went for a bike ride with Deb. She is my awesome riding partner that keeps me going when I wonder if I even want to do this stuff. After, I went to the cabin to clean. Years ago we had a load of soil brought in because we were going to make landscaping changes. It has been sitting there so long, that grass was growing on it. A year ago I had told my Dad that I loved his grape arbor. He immediately cut the pipe and had Lance bring me a "grape arbor". When Lance and I went up to decide the best place to put the grape arbor, it happened to be where this pile of soil was. We of course don't have a tractor, but our neighbor does. He was kind enough to level my pile. Words can't express how thankful I am for what he did. While there are some "mean" people that are part of the homeowners association, there are also some of the very best people. I believe they are living next to me. I finally got the sheets changed in the cabin. Next time you see a picture from this angle, you will see the grape arbor. My goal is to get it up before my Dad dies, so he knows I appreciate what he did for me. The white post you see is the beginning post.

Snorkling and Sailing

This is a picture on the top of Waimea Canyon of the Napali Coast.
We lived through the Tsunami. We were evacuated up from our fourth floor room to the sixth floor. There were no empty rooms on either the fifth or sixth floor so we shared a room with a couple from New Orleans. We each had our own bed but the Tsunami was to hit Kauai at 3:07, so we stayed up waiting to see if we would see, hear or experience anything big. Between 3:00 and 3:30 I sat on the balcony listening and watching the dark ocean. The only thing that really happened was that there was a time that it was very quiet and then the waves started up again. I can only think that is when the Tsunami actually hit our shores. The only other ramifications were that we had to stay in our new rooms until 8:00 a.m. (We now have a greater idea of what we need to do to be prepared for an emergency -- but that is for a later post)
We had signed up for a snorkeling/sailing tour along the Napali Coast. I was looking forward to snorkeling with my new found swimming skills. We all boarded the boat and started putting on our sunscreen and getting ready for this adventure when the captain of the boat announced that there would be no snorkeling due to the Tsunami. I was so disappointed. Then I thought about how sometimes in life we sign up for the snorkeling/sailing plan and we get shifted to another adventure. We were now on a sailing/whale watching adventure. It's not what I signed up for. I was disappointed. But it was still an adventure with memorable and enjoyable times. As I have contemplated life in the last few weeks I realized that sometimes we think we are going snorkeling/sailing and we end up on a different adventure. Sometimes the adventure is dangerous and disappointing. Nevertheless we can choose to make the best of it or not. Josh and Alisa's tour is not quite what they were expecting. They have met this change of journey with faith and hope. I pray that I will be able to support them on this new journey with faith hope and courage to match theirs. We didn't get to snorkel, but the whales were wonderful.

Las Vegas Bowl 2009
BYU played in the Las Vegas Bowl. It was a great game and again Mike should have some awesome pictures. Between Mike and Alisa taking pictures -- there should be some great picture memories. We went bowling before the game. It was sooooooo cold, but having a little one on my lap was helpful. It was fun to have James, Sam and Luke with us. They were absolute troopers having to be in that cold wind. The boys stormed the field after the game and had a great time. BYU won. We all found our way back to the car. Rich and I left for Annapolis the next morning.

Orlando 2009
Nauvoo 2009
Reflections of Nauvoo. I can't imagine being a Latter Day Saint in those times. Life was hard. I can't imagine always being cold, never enough food, and having to cross that river under terrible circumstances. Their faith was unmatched. This trip made me want to study harder and increase my faithfulness.
Yuba Tri 2009
Rich and I are going through a mid life crisis of sorts. Most people buy Harleys or Convertibles. But we instead buy road bikes and think we are young enough to do a Triathlon. These are the pictures of the Yuba Tri. Yes I did beat Rich, only by 50 seconds -- but who is counting? A win is a win. I had swam 2-3 times a week and his one week of pool training just didn't make him fast enough to make up those lost minutes on the run and the bike. A rematch next year? How crazy can two old people be?

Twin Lakes 2009 - Family Vacation
This is a few of the pictures from our family vacation. We spent the first day in Fallon celebrating my parents 67th wedding anniversary. We had a great breakfast at the farm. The melons were fantastic as usual. We then went up to Twin Lakes. I will post more later. Mike has a ton of pictures and hopefully we can get his video of playing in the water. Mike did not get pictures of the bear that visited us in the middle of the night, but at least we got all the kids in the cabin.

Happy Mothers Day to My Mom
I love the way she taught me to love nature. She still gets sad when the asparagus is gone in the spring. We used to walk along the ditch banks and pick asparagus. I miss that.
She taught me to love beautiful flowers and appreciate their aroma.
She allowed me freedom to question and learn.
She taught me to love animals and the happiness they can bring to life.
She taught me to enjoy the small things in life -- like bubbles blowing in the wind.
She taught me to never loose my sense of humor, even when things seem really bad.
For all this and many more wonderful memories. Thanks mom. I love you.
Happy Mothers Day to Me
I received some new and improved boxes: Instead of one box I now have four. I can get to them and can fix them if necessary. Yahoo!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Rich for wonderful Mother's Day gifts.

Ice Breaker Triathlon

I don't have pictures(this is a good thing for everyone viewing this blog). Today Rich and I and 11 Valcom employees participated in the Icebreaker Triathlon in American Fork. 300 yard pool swim, 11.3 mile bike and 2.95 mile run. Suffice it to say not many people our age compete in these sorts of activities. Therefore we did VERY well in our age categories. Josh actually did very well and there were lots of folks in his age division (7th). I often wonder what possessed me to take up this type of competiton. Probably because I can beat Rich in the swim and I like the varied training that a Tri affords. I had the biggest cheering section since all the employees had finished by the time I came in.

Happy Birthday DAD!!!!
Today March 15, 2009 (ides of March) is my father’s (Bill Lattin) 89th birthday. I have never known what to give my father for his birthday so today I will give him a tribute. I have posted a small slideshow of the things that represent his varied life.
My dad is a genius. I grew up with an inventor father. We had a can crusher years before they became popular and actually made money for the inventor. He not only raced cars, but he was the mechanic that made them so fast. He was an educated farmer whose passion for work and the land was passed on to his progenitors. He grew up during the depression and knows how to use and reuse anything. He served under General Patton in WWII. He was an educator and then became the Associate Warden of the Nevada State Prison. He had the ability to see problems and solve them. He was a master negotiator. The words I remember most from him are “You have to learn to follow the rules until you are in a position to change the rules.” He was not excited about my baptism into the LDS church, but supported all my activities once I made that commitment. Thanks Dad for many years of insight and support.
I would hope that my contribution to society will honor the Lattin name.
I LOVE YOU, Happy Birthday!!!!
